Little did he know, Kazimir Malevich, that his precious square – that which in the geometric abstract painting movement called suprematism in the 1920’s was considered to be the fundamental element, the original shape from which all other shapes could be generated – a hundred years later would be called a pixel and be even more fundamental than he could have ever hoped.

Today it is the one truly democratic institution on the internet. Democratic in the sense that it does not discriminate, it makes no distinction between good or bad images or information but constitutes all, regardless of content. It is impossible to tell a Richter from a Mario on the pixel level. The pixel is a cultural equalizer.
