About José Roca
José Roca, from Colombia, is currently a Curator at Tate, London, and Artistic Director of FLORA ars+natura, an independent space for contemporary art in Bogotá. He managed for a decade the arts program at the Banco de la República in Bogotá. Roca was a co-curator of the I Poly/graphic Triennial in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the 27th Bienal de São Paulo, Brazil and the Encuentro de Medellín MDE07, and was the Artistic Director of Philagrafika , the Graphic Unconscious. Philadelphia’s international Triennial celebrating print in contemporary art,  was one of the largest arts events in the United States and the world’s most important print-related exposition.  He was a jury for the 52nd Venice Biennial and was the chief curator of the 8 Bienal do Mercosul in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He is the author of Transpolitical: art in Colombia 1992-2012. Lives in Bogotá.

Printmaking is plagued with tensions that arise from the clash between its technical and conceptual aspects, like the contradiction of voluntarily limiting in the edition a medium that theoretically has the possibilities of infinite reproduction, the challenges to the craft and to the workshop brought upon by digital printing, but especially the entrenchment of its practitioners within the medium instead of considering print as one more of the tools at hand. Roca will talk about issues regarding print in the expanded field of art, as well as how he and his team addressed the issue of medium specificity when curating Philagrafika, the citywide event held throughout Philadelphia in 2010.

ForumGrafika is a seminar serial on Printmaking under the academic year 2012-2013. We will deal with issues in printmaking now. The medium has become an emergent integral factor in current artistic practices. The aspiration of the seminar serial is to generate critical dialogue, to facilitate an international and national exchange of ideas and encourage new critical theory with focus on expanding understanding of today’s Printmaking.
