“She’s singing: I can feel – boxes break” (2015-2016)

She’s singing: I can feel – boxes break is a research project that investigates fundamental questions about what it means to sing live, in front of others. Historically, song and singing have commonly been associated with direct and authentic expressive force. I will interrogate how this power has been instrumentalised as a rhetorical, seductive agent – and explore possible alternatives.

My research will balance theoretical, physical and collaborative methods in asking:
– How can we attempt to expose and challenge our conditioned emotional responses through formal experimentations in performance-making?
– Following that, how might we cultivate a critical sensitivity, one that brings an awareness to the way that singing can be emotionally manipulative?
– How can we activate the unspent political potential of the emotive power of singing within a queer/feminist framework?”
