“Practices of the Essential In-Between is an explorative journey with a transformative consequence for STEALTH.unlimited's practice. The seminar on June 15, 2015, part of the PhD trajectory at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm (KKH), will take place in Rotterdam, at the very site of one of STEALTH's ongoing projects, co-initiated within the association City in the Making. Moving between the floors of a set of buildings recently rescued from a destiny of long-term hibernation, the seminar will reflect on this particular endeavour from the perspective of the mind-boggling issue of how and on which premises to common the city, in the context of the unravelling welfare state and re-emergent struggles for urban existence.

In Rotterdam, for STEALTH, this centres around the uncertain status of the former public housing stock. Some 150 years ago it emerged from a daring and rebellious cooperative initiatives to achieve access to housing in cities that had become the site of severe economic struggle, after which it got gradually included in the welfare state, whilst the last two decades brought it to a transfer from public to private ownership. Since the crisis of 2008 substantial closure or boarding up of this housing stock has taken place, partly as a result of disruptive governmental policies, but foremost due to mismanagement and speculative risk-taking of its current real-estate owners. Now it might be the time to close the circle and go back to its origins, by taking matters into common hands (again).

Since the beginning of 2014, City in the Making is engaged in bringing a fraction of that stock back to forms of common use, set in three apartment buildings right at the Central Station in Rotterdam, for a period of ten years. Although a modest attempt, knowing that hundreds of apartments and workspaces in the city are lingering in the same status, the intent is to take it as a point to open up paths to a much larger potential of re-commoning these urban resources to collective benefit. Therefore, in combination with the alternatives economic models currently being brought to the test within the initiative, the seminar specifically takes as its starting point to imagine ways of commoning the future of former public property housing stock currently stalled in the city.

The seminar brings contributions by Martijn Jeroen van der Linden (researcher and PhD candidate at TU Delft / Economics of Innovation and Technology), since 2009 involved in new economic thinking, his PhD thesis focuses on the purposes of money and capital, and aims to propose a new design for the monetary system, Aetzel Griffioen (political philosopher, co-ordinator of Skillcity Rotterdam), who researches new forms of collective prosperity and works on socio-ecologic education in the neighbourhoods of Rotterdam-South, and City in the Making community - Erik Jutten, Guido Marsille, Piet Vollaard. Throughout the seminar Ana and Marc will enter a conversation with Saskia van Stein (curator, director Bureau Europa Maastricht) that will zoom-out on the larger framework of STEALTH's work, particularly in the last couple of years.”
