Dafna Maimon, "The She. The Same". Video still.

Bonobo Maimon – A report to an Academy
In this lecture I will talk about my continuous speculations regarding individuality as an ephemeral and fragmented operator of the body. I will discuss these observations through examples of video and performance works I have made in the past years between 2007 and 2014 along with my practice of working with the untrained and largely unconscious body as performer. In my most recent work Human Comma Being I became interested in the definition of Bonobo primates in relation to - and as comparison to the definition of human beings. The first iteration of this work was shown at the Iaspis open house in September 2014, this lecture will constitute the second iteration of this ongoing new “body” of work.

Finnish/Israeli Artist Dafna Maimon b.1982 works with video, performance and sculpture. Her work explores human dramas and the construction of the self through invented autobiographical characters that battle with the configuration of individuality, alienation, the body, and the perception of reality. Her projects showcase the economy of close personal ties as well as materialize through them, placing value on the idea of community on a grassroots level. Equally central within Maimon’s practice is the research and employment of the constructs of cultural artifacts such as cinema, TV, theater and science.

Maimon grew up in Finland and studied in The Netherlands, she holds a BA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, and an MFA from The Sandberg Institute. She has been a resident at Iaspis Stockholm, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council New York and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture Maine. Maimon has shown her work internationally in venues such as PS1 Moma New York, Kunst-Werke Berlin, Lillith Performance studio Malmö, Centre for Contemporary Arts Uzajdowski Castle Warsaw, Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Based in Berlin, Deutsches Architektur Zentrum, Hebbel Am Ufer Theater, Berlin Art Prize, W139 Amsterdam, Annie Wharton Gallery Los Angeles and Project Native Informant London. She is a founding member of the artist collective Baby Darwin who has created two season of the online TV Show Fitness For Artists TV for ARTE Creative. Maimon currently lives and works in Berlin.
