About RH Quaytman
Lives and works in New York. Quaytman creates installations of paintings termed ‘chapters.’ The heart of this project is to shift legibility off the individual painting out into the site and into its own context withing the larger project of ongoing chapters, begun in 2001. This is accomplished via an exploration of formalist and conceptual ideas about painting, as well as poetic and grammatical possibilities that occur between photo-based imagery and abstraction. Every installation combines a complex grammar of abstraction, color geometry and optical effects, with images related to the sites in which the paintings are first exhibited.

For a period of three years – 2005- 2008 – R.H. Quaytman acted as the director of Orchard, a collaborative artist run gallery in New York's Lower East Side. They were interested in exploring divergent movements such as institutional critique, Kontext Kunst, the legacies of Latin American and Eastern European vanguard practices with art being made now. It is perhaps then fitting that the artist’s artistic practice reconsiders critiques of the autonomous art object wherein the idea of painting serves as a model for the larger discursive meanings of art. Quaytman's  use of wood panel as material support and the frequent grounding of the picture plane in photo-based silk screening, underscore the perceptual, perspectival and durational experience of painting as an assessment of the larger social, historical, personal and architectural contexts in which the paintings appear.
